The U.S. imposes sanctions under various legal authorities against foreign individuals, private entities, and governments that engage in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons) and their delivery systems or in certain transfers of conventional weapons or other lethal military equipment. Parties that are sanctioned under these authorities are typically ineligible to participate in commercial defense trade licensed by DDTC.
The Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation in the State Department coordinates the sanctioning of such proliferation activities, and maintains a Web site providing further information in this regard. Click here to view the website.
